ON THE SURFACE: an emotional thrilling action, heist, character drama, and romance.
The characters are extremely well written, with realistic depth (the ugly/broken parts, the beautiful/admiration worthy parts) the action is high ride of adrenaline and excitement, the melancholic lows so realistically depressing/relatable, and the peaks of hope/success/happiness such an absolute blossom of good feelings in your stomach and smile.
BELOW THE SURFACE: a story of surviving trauma, healing from the past, self discovery, finding the purpose/people to live for, meaningful friendship, love, and finding long-term happiness. Mr. Red is a character who has lost it all, suffered so much -and continues to-, that it only makes sense for him to have lost all hope. This lack of hope, is shared by so many of us, especially in the face of the many types of crises across the word occurring all at once these 15 years... I believe Mr. Red's at-first-reluctant, then willing, then determined journey, is a much needed reminder for us that we must not give up. Life may have f**d us over, but it is never over, there is always a hope for happiness, success, love, whatever it we dream of, as long as we fight for it with every bit of our soul and grit. We don't have to live inside the boxes we got placed in/or blindly walked into, there is more.
I sincerely believe this reading makes for life changing reflections. A MUST READ, 100/100.
This, so far, is decisively Mr. Griffin's best work.
Young, lost, sometimes aware of it, other times feeling like they know exactly where they're going, Art and Claire are two extremely well written characters, and above all, such a precious relatable pair. Their charisma, playfulness, chemistry, adventures, and painful struggles took me through a beautiful and heartbreaking rollercoaster. I think we can all see a little bit of ourselves in them, in their hopes, dreams, and disillusions... I know I certainly lost myself in them and their story. This is a story that will make you laugh, cry, and want to scream (for the right reasons lol), taking you back to that beautiful vulnerable time of self discovery and love. And I won't give any spoilers, but the ending alone...is beyond worth it. Read it 4 times.
This is a powerful story of a young man beaten by life, who after his world turned upside down during a brutally humbling disaster, finally takes the opportunity to change his perspective on life and himself. It will rattle your sensitivities with it's unapologetic main character, high-stakes actions, and intensely real social bonds/clashes, leaving you hungry for more. It is a true treat and dive into human psychology.
I absolutely loved the main character, Isiyo, and I know you will too. He's a well written complex character, who at first is admittedly hard to like-because he is all the ugly part of ourselves we don't like and refuse to admit to. It's precisely because of that, when we see him fighting so hard to change himself for the better, that I was inspired and truly moved. Give Isiyo a chance, and I think through him, you'll find/acknowledge parts of yourself you've never allowed yourself to reflect on.
Apparently all we need is an extreme wake up call or ego death, to force us to become the better versions of ourselves. This book is a beautiful way of experiencing that.
I was beyond amazed and moved by The Human Interchange! Each short story took a unique close look at
people, with incredibly moving messages that had me reflecting for days.
A lot of the stories were a painful but important reminder of how life doesn't always go to plan, giving us more pain than good fortune. Some stories admittedly demanded the difficult task of taking a good look in the mirror, pointing out how sometimes we are the ones causing ourselves more pain than others could, while other stories reminded me that perhaps in spite of it all, we can do/be better. And that gives me hope.
Mr. Griffin's stories sincerely resonated with me, so thank you. Thank you for these refreshingly honest reflections, amidst a time and society pretending to be okay.
As a lover of contemporary poetry and spoken poetry... this was an absolute delicacy. The writing is bold, unique, and unafraid to break convention, to speaks its emotions and messages without fear or censoring.
It is far from being the fluffy pretentious poetry of inexperienced daydreamers, nor the simplistic cries for attention of an unstable youth, -no, it's a rich 3 course poetry meal, that will have you re-reading it to savor it, leaving you wanting for seconds, or maybe even thirds.
I think Mr. Griffin did truly share with us who he is, pulling back the curtain of the vulnerable parts of himself that we often hide from the world or are too embarrassed to share.
